The Police Please!

Jason and I went to the Police concert last night at Usana Amphitheater with Andrew and Simone. All I can say is wow!

We had absolutely fantastic seats. We were only about ten rows from the front. These seats were well worth the $200 price tag.

Sting, Andy, and Stewart were amazing! Listening to them you never would have guessed that they had just recently reunited after a 25 year hiatus.

I am too young to have been a fan of the Police when they were in their heyday. I was introduced to them when I was in high school, a decade after they broke up. I had been a fanatical Sting enthusiast for years and once I learned of the Police their music quickly became a favorite of mine as well.

Thankfully the audience at this concert was not super tame and lame. Most of the people around us never took their seats-so I didn’t either. I sung, clapped, screamed, and bounced around the whole night. I knew every word to every song without any thought. Listening to the Police was like listening to the soundtrack to my life-so familiar was every chord and word.

Although Sting is now 56, he still looks like he is in much better shape than me. That man has aged extremely well! The other members of the Police didn’t look like they had fared as well over the last twenty five years but Stewart Copeland still had it going on, banging away on the drums!

Wow! If they ever tour again, I will definitely be there.

Bistros, Bangs, and Box Office Hits

Jason and I decided that a Salt Lake City weekend getaway was not quite enough of a celebration to commemorate seven years of marriage. So on the following weekend, the actual weekend of our anniversary, Jason had a few more anniversary activities planned.

When he was in the process of planning these events I made one special request. Now I know that there are many girls out there that would use their anniversary as an excuse to force their husbands to go see a chick flick or take them dancing. Normally I would be all for coercing Jason into doing these sorts of activities, but for our anniversary I had something else in mind.

What I really wanted to do more than anything else was go see Ironman. After all, nothing says romance like a comic book based movie about a guy who decides to strap on a metal contraption, of his own geeky design, and take to the skies. Ok, I admit, I’m a geek but that really is not novel information.

Since our anniversary falls on an excellent time of year for high-budget, action-packed, geeky movies, it’s a great opportunity, and excuse, to see them. Last year Spiderman III opened on our anniversary, and going to see it was #1 on my anniversary wish list.

Being a geek himself, Jason was happy to humor my Ironman request. So he bought tickets for us to go see it that Saturday night. Beforehand we went to a restaurant in Salt Lake City called The Paris. This was another restaurant that I had never heard of. It turned out to be a quaint little bistro located in the middle of a residential area. The food was very good; my favorite thing about it was definitely the cheese. I have a peculiar fondness for unusually pungent cheeses and The Paris had some excellent, powerfully strong, cheeses. Yum! The appetizer we ordered featured a potent cheese served with caramelized pears and pecans. Yum! My mouth is watering right now just thinking about it. So if your taste buds are similarly skewed I would definitely recommend trying The Paris.

The food wasn’t the only exceptional thing we sampled that night, Ironman was awesome! Jason and I have already seen it a second time.

I have bangs!

But the weekend of our anniversary was not only filled with scrumptious food and high quality entertainment, it also marked a life altering event for me-I got bangs. I haven’t had bangs since I was in junior high. For those of you who are extremely behind the times-bangs are back in. I once promised myself that I would never consent to having bangs again, but that was back when bangs were only worn by rednecks trapped in the 80’s.

Since bangs are once again stylish, and I was ready to try something new with my hair-I decided to take the plunge. My new hairstyle is apparently exactly like Heidi Klum’s. It is also surprisingly similar to the haircut I had in fourth grade.

Jason thinks the bangs make me look European but he won’t tell me if he likes my hair better with or without them. He refuses to give a real answer and says I look good both ways. While this response proves that Jason is a smart man, and I do appreciate his enthusiasm, it would be good to get an unbiased answer now and then. So if any of you have an opinion about my new do, I would love to hear it!

The Kerfuffle Shuffle

Last Friday Jason and I went to a concert at the U of U, known as The Grand Kerfuffle, with my brother Andrew and his fiancé Simone. What is a kerfuffle you ask? The answer: I have absolutely no idea. I think it must be something akin to a shindig. Whatever it is, the U’s event is not just your average kerfuffle-it’s a GRAND kerfuffle. So all you schools that put on common kerfuffles-take that!

Although I’m still not entirely sure what exactly a kerfuffle is, this I do know, The Grand Kerfuffle is an outdoor concert thrown every year for the student body. It used to be an entirely free event and now students pay just five dollars to attend. Since my bro and Simone are both students at the U, they were able to get $5 tickets for me and Jason. The bands performing this year were Augustana, Hellogoodbye, and Shiny Toy Guns. Since I like all three of these bands, there was no way I could pass on $5 tickets to see them.

The weather on Friday was supposed to be warm and springish, unlike the other days last week that it snowed and felt like February again. But alas, the weathermen were slightly off on their prediction of when the warm front would move in, and Friday didn’t feel anything like mid-April. So I wore my boarding coat on top of another coat, and a beanie to this concert. Drew somehow forgot that it was freezing outside and didn’t bring anything but a hoodie. He had to borrow every extra warm thing we had brought. Common sense is not a strong trait in my family.

We had a lot of fun at the concert, despite a couple peculiarities. Yes, some things were peculiar. First of all, the crowd was very cheering deficient. Seriously people, do you not know how to clap? I felt like I was one of the loudest people there. Even when they were obviously enjoying themselves, their cheering was rather pathetic. It was a strange phenomenon.

Another thing that I thought was somewhat obnoxious was the couples making out roughly a foot away from us. Okay people, we realize you are anxious to get some action, but at least go to the back were you aren’t so conspicuous. Is that really so much to ask? If I had wanted that kind of show I would have just stayed at home. College students…was I ever that dumb?

But yes, regardless of these oddities, I had a great time. We didn’t make it in time to see Augustana, unfortunately, but we did see most of Hellogoodbye’s performance. The crowd was obviously not terribly familiar with their music and didn’t really get too into it, until they played their one hit, All of Your Love.

The crowd reacted much differently to Shiny Toy Guns. Their applause was still lacking, but they were definitely energized and grooving with the music. The masses were jumping, moshing, and crowd surfing. I took the opportunity to jump too, even with my temperamental tendon. Simone, I discovered, is a woman after my own heart. She and I bounced around and rocked until our legs felt like jelly. I can’t say the same for the boys. Though, with some strong encouragement, I actually did get Jason to jump with me a little. He looked a bit like the guys from A Night at the Roxbury, but I was glad to see him do something beside just stand there.

All the bouncing paid off for me and Simone. We stayed nice and warm while the boys froze. Those boys…

I still had a great time even with Mr. Lethargic. It was a fun, energetic, and cheap concert. So thanks Drew and Simone for inviting us to tag along, and thanks Simone for shaking it with me. There was a whole lot of kerfuffling going on!

P.S. It has come to my attention that kerfuffle means a disorderly outburst or tumult. We learn something new everyday.
