Here Comes Peter Cottontail

I think just about everyone has fond childhood memories of Easter whether they be of new Easter dresses, fancy ham dinners, creative egg coloring, or the thrill of the Easter egg hunt.

Wesley refused to put down the Elmo movie the Easter Bunny left him even while he searched for his Elmo eggs.

Because the Easter egg hunt was a favorite of mine as a child I do what I can to make sure that my nieces and nephews have great memories of it as well. That’s why I always contribute lots of goodies and toys for my family’s hunt every year. Since there are ten kiddies in my family, all age ten or younger, the hunt is a very popular event, and a little chaotic. The children can’t wait to get outside and find that stuff. Trying to hold them back is like trying to keep a herd of wild, short, and smiley bulls from charging.

Every year, in addition to toys and candy, I hide three golden eggs containing money. These are the most coveted eggs and definitely a crowd pleaser with the kids. The finders get the prestige of their success plus the riches the eggs possess. Yes, fame and fortune – just what every child wants.

Along with the traditional Easter activities Jason and I decided to do something not so conventional this year: snowboarding. A huge storm came in the day before Easter and dropped over 20 inches of fresh snow overnight and just two days before that it had snowed another 30 inches. Jason and I lacked the will to resist such a powdery temptation! So we spent the bulk of our Easter on the slopes. Fantastic! Thanks to most people being involved in holiday activities the resort was nearly empty. That paired with the absolutely fabulous powder and the warmth of spring made this a day for the record books, one of my favorite boarding days ever! Wow! I think snowboarding on Easter may become the norm for us.

We had a great Easter weekend thanks to some amazing fresh snow and fun family exploits!

April’s Idiots

The origin of April Fool’s Day isn’t precisely known. It may have been instigated by one of Chaucer’s tales or its beginnings may have had something to do with groups of rural folk in the 1600s celebrating New Years Day on April 1st instead of January 1st, a lingering tradition from the Middle Ages. (Those fools!) But however it started, April Fool’s has been a day of practical jokes and playful tricks for centuries.

While some people thoroughly enjoy the yearly opportunity to annoy, mess with, and humiliate their family members, coworkers, and friends others despise this day of shenanigans and mischief. Personally, I think a few harmless jokes now and then make life more entertaining. Many of my colleagues feel the same way so there are always a few curious occurrences on April 1st at my work. In years past fake heads have appeared in desk drawers or cars have inexplicably become completely cocooned in saran wrap. This year about a dozen live goldfish spontaneously appeared in the water cooler and every single item on my friend David’s desk mysteriously became hot glued or duct taped to it.

The water cooler magically became a spawning ground for goldfish.

Of the goldfish scheme I am innocent. But all that taping and gluing may have had something to do with me and my friend Wendy…or maybe a lot to do with us. Okay, it was us and it was awesome! David’s desk looked totally unaltered after we operated on it except nothing moved when you tried to pick it up including his mouse, pens, paperclips, papers, coffee mug…everything. I am a fool’s genius!

Even a few of Jason’s work chums got into the pranking spirit this year. A project manager brought in chocolate covered marshmallows as a treat for everyone; they turned out to be chocolate covered cotton balls. But strangely, a number of his work associates didn’t figure this out and consumed the sweets, cotton and all. One of them remarked to Jason afterwards that the marshmallows were really old and stale so the candy wasn’t very good. (Note to self: people will eat anything if it’s covered in chocolate.)

Yum! Chocolate and cotton: the perfect combination.
Yum! Chocolate and cotton: the perfect flavor combination. How could anyone eat one of these and not notice that it just wasn't right?

April Fool’s is an amusing and unpredictable holiday but it’s probably a good thing it only comes once a year; I don’t have enough hot glue sticks to properly celebrate it more often than that.

The Ladies of my Life

I’m not really into women. Hmmm…that didn’t quite sound right. What I meant to say is that the majority of my close friends are men. This is primarily due to me being a little picky when it comes to my female acquaintances. See, I’m not really a big fan of drama, over-sensitivity, or high schoolish behavior patterns; I just don’t have the patience for them. And I’ve found that drama queens, stuck in a high school mentality, seem to be predominantly female. Sorry ladies, it’s sad but unfortunately true. However, although I maintain a higher male to female friend ratio, I associate with some of the most fabulous females around. I went out with two of those wonderful ladies last week, Wendy and Robyn, good friends of mine from work.

These lovely ladies are awesome!

We had dinner at the Pie Pizzeria. We sat on their patio, next to a huge roaring fire, and chatted and chuckled for hours. When we finally got up to leave the employee at the front desk looked at us like, what you are still doing here? It was a great night and I am very grateful that I have such amazing ladies in my life. My chick pals may not be as prolific as my manly buddies but what they lack in quantity they certainly make up for in quality. Thanks Robyn and Wendy! Anytime you ladies are up for another gab session I am definitely in!
